What is the best diet for powerlifting?

Powerlifters not only use a different weight training philosophy than do bodybuilders, they also eat different.

One of the elements that you will notice right away that is different is the carb intake. Typically a bodybuilder will limit the carbs he takes. Powerlifters, who are not trying to show the ultimate six pack, can afford to eat more carbs in general over a training cycle, and in particular on any given day.

The minimal carb diet helps a bodybuilder keep the body trim but by going the opposite direction, the powerlifter has lots of fuel for pushing through his workout. And that is the aim with the diet. A powerlifter is not necessarily using his diet to tray and reveal every little muscle detail he is using that diet to fuel how much he can lift. A powerlifting meal plan may look like this:

75 to 100 grams of carbs from pasta, bread, rice, etc.

40-50 grams of protein from quality sources such as beef, fish, chicken, and pork. They also include some fruit and vegetables in raw form.

A typical powerlifter will eat a meal like this several times a day (4-5 times a day, with some powerlifters eating double that yes, 8-9 meals and supplement sessions per day). Powerlifters also load up in the post workout meal.

Like bodybuilders, powerlifters will use supplements such as protein powder and make muscle shakes. The primary difference is in that fuel load of extra carbs, as well as not watching the fat intake as closely as a bodybuilder will. For a powerlifter, its all about a big fuel source to feed the best performance of the muscles in action. The bottom line for a powerlifting diet is to make eating to fuel the muscle work your primary goal.
